HTC Aria (AT&T)

September 3rd, 2010

review htc ariaThe good: The HTC Aria is compact, feature rich smartphone that runs on Android version 2.1 with HTC’s Sense user interface. It has a 5-megapixel camera, GPS, Bluetooth, and supports Wi-Fi and 3G networks.

The bad: The Aria’s smaller display makes for a cramped onscreen keyboard. Its camera doesn’t have a flash and you can’t install non-Market apps.

The bottom line: The HTC Aria is a solid, midrange Android smartphone, but it’s a shame AT&T restricts it by blocking Android’s capability to install third-party apps.

At CES 2010, AT&T announced it would introduce an HTC Android phone this year. True to its word, it just unveiled the HTC Aria. Similar to the HTC HD Mini in design, the Aria runs on Android 2.1 with HTC’s Sense user interface and includes a good deal of features for its size. It’s certainly not the most powerful Android device on the market–power users might want to wait for the recently announced Samsung Captivate–and we’re upset that AT&T has once again blocked third-party app downloads. However, the Aria is a solid midrange smartphone that’s certainly better than the Motorola Backflip, AT&T’s other Android offering. The HTC Aria costs $129.99 with a two-year contract and after a $100 mail-in rebate. We think it should cost a bit less–$100 would be the sweet spot–but its price isn’t unreasonable. » Read more: HTC Aria (AT&T)

Samsung Intercept

August 26th, 2010

When we reviewed the Samsung Moment on Sprint in November 2009, there weren’t a lot of Android handsets on the market. Things have certainly changed in a little more than a half year, and Samsung’s replacement, the Intercept, has a lot of competition. The Intercept is a starter Android smartphone, and though its features pale in comparison to the HTC EVO 4G and upcoming Samsung Epic 4G (a Galaxy S phone with slider keyboard), it costs half the price. Not everyone wants to jump into a large and expensive smartphone, and the kinda cute Intercept targets those who want to start with something affordable and pocketable.

Motorola Droid 2 (Verizon Wireless)

August 18th, 2010

Motorola Droid 2 (Verizon Wireless) ReviewThe good: The Motorola Droid 2 sports a sleeker look and an improved keyboard. The smartphone also features a faster processor, double the RAM of the original Droid, and ships with Android 2.2.

The bad: The Droid 2 doesn’t have a front-facing camera and Android 2.2′s new camera interface. It lacks HDMI port. Though the keyboard is better, keys are a bit stiff to press.

The bottom line: The Motorola Droid 2 offers a number of improvements that make it a worthy upgrade from the Droid and certainly a top choice for those who want a smartphone with a physical keyboard.

Review:

Motorola Droid 2 (Verizon Wireless) Review

Editors’ note: Portions of this review were taken from our evaluation of the Droid Xsince both smartphones share a number of features.

It’s hard to believe that it hasn’t even been a year since the original Motorola Droidcame out, but as we all know, Android has exploded over the past few months and there are simply bigger and better smartphones out there. Enter the Motorola Droid 2. As the successor to the Droid, the handset offers a number of improvements, including a sleeker design, better keyboard, faster processor, and the latest version of Android OS. It lacks some of the higher-end features of theDroid X, but it’s still an outstanding device on its own. There are enough improvements to make it worth the upgrade, and it will certainly satiate the need for those who want a physical keyboard. The Motorola Droid 2 is available now for $199.99 with a two-year contract and after a $100 mail-in rebate. Verizon will also release a limited edition R2-D2 version of the Droid 2 in September. It will include exclusive “Star Wars” content and hardware designed to look like R2-D2.

BlackBerry Torch 9800

BlackBerry Torch 9800* UPCOMING *

BlackBerry Torch 9800 Review

Though BlackBerrys continue to be extremely popular, it’s no secret that RIM needed to step up its game and really work on improving and advancing its operating system. And over the past few months, the company has given us previews of a refreshed OS, but now, we’ve finally had a chance to put it to the test.

The RIM BlackBerry Torch 9800 is the first device to ship running BlackBerry OS 6 and will be available starting August 12 for US$199.99 with a two-year contract. We actually got the smartphone a few days before the official unveiling to put it through its paces, and we found a lot to like about it. The slider phone–a first for RIM–brings together a touchscreen and physical keyboard into a solid, compact design. The new OS brings some much-needed and welcome additions, including a better browser, an enhanced multimedia experience, and improved user interface. Sure, in the grand scheme of things, none of this is new but at least it puts RIM back on track. It’s just unfortunate that RIM didn’t upgrade other parts of the phone, such as the display and processor, as the Torch doesn’t quite stack up to some of the latest smartphones. Still, there’s enough there to keep BlackBerry fans happy. » Read more: BlackBerry Torch 9800
