Vocera, Motorola create smartphone for hospitals
September 7th, 2010
Vocera — known for its wireless badge form factor communication devices for hospital settings — announced the first shipment of its new device: the Vocera smartphone. The company jointly developed the smartphone with Motorola, but Vocera said the device offers the same one-touch, voice user interface of the Vocera communications badge. The Vocera smartphone runs on Microsoft’s Windows Mobile 6.1 operating system, which supports alarm/alert systems, asset tracking, medical reference software and includes access to corporate email.
Even though Vocera calls it a smartphone, it makes no mention of whether or not the device has a Web browser, or whether Internet access has been removed. Not sure a device qualifies as a “smartphone” if it lacks access to the full Internet. (Update: Vocera wrote in to clarify that the device does include Internet Explorer and access to the Internet.)
Vocera counts more than 600 hospitals and 400,000 users as its customers — Arkansas Children’s Hospital was one of the beta users of the Vocera smartphone:
“Arkansas Children’s Hospital wanted to extend the intelligent, yet simple, Vocera experience to a wider user base to include hospitalists and doctors,” said Kim Hays, Telecom Applications Analyst for Arkansas Children’s Hospital. “Based on the needs of a specific group of our clinical staff, the smartphone had immediate appeal. They now have instant access to key resources through the Vocera communications system’s voice interface, but in a phone form that they like for its familiarity.”

AT&T Plans 5 Android Smartphones in 2010
August 25th, 2010
AT&T plans to launch five Android-based devices from a range of handset makers including Dell, HTC and Motorola by first half of 2010. Three of these — the Motorola smartphone, Dell’s first Android smartphone currently available only in China and Brazil, and a new HTC smartphone — will be exclusive to the AT&T network. The company made the announcement at the ongoing Consumer Electronics Show.
The move is a big win for the Google-designed open source Android operating system that made its debut in October 2008. Android launched on the HTC-designed T-Mobile G1 phone. Since then, at least 10 Android phones have hit the market including devices from handset makers such as Samsung and LG. Even Google has launched its own Android phone. The Google Nexus One phone designed by HTC arrived Tuesday. » Read more: AT&T Plans 5 Android Smartphones in 2010

Motorola Droid 2 (Verizon Wireless)
August 18th, 2010
The good: The Motorola Droid 2 sports a sleeker look and an improved keyboard. The smartphone also features a faster processor, double the RAM of the original Droid, and ships with Android 2.2.
The bad: The Droid 2 doesn’t have a front-facing camera and Android 2.2′s new camera interface. It lacks HDMI port. Though the keyboard is better, keys are a bit stiff to press.
The bottom line: The Motorola Droid 2 offers a number of improvements that make it a worthy upgrade from the Droid and certainly a top choice for those who want a smartphone with a physical keyboard.
Review:

Editors’ note: Portions of this review were taken from our evaluation of the Droid Xsince both smartphones share a number of features.
It’s hard to believe that it hasn’t even been a year since the original Motorola Droidcame out, but as we all know, Android has exploded over the past few months and there are simply bigger and better smartphones out there. Enter the Motorola Droid 2. As the successor to the Droid, the handset offers a number of improvements, including a sleeker design, better keyboard, faster processor, and the latest version of Android OS. It lacks some of the higher-end features of theDroid X, but it’s still an outstanding device on its own. There are enough improvements to make it worth the upgrade, and it will certainly satiate the need for those who want a physical keyboard. The Motorola Droid 2 is available now for $199.99 with a two-year contract and after a $100 mail-in rebate. Verizon will also release a limited edition R2-D2 version of the Droid 2 in September. It will include exclusive “Star Wars” content and hardware designed to look like R2-D2.
