BlackBerry PlayBook Review

May 24th, 2011

BlackBerry PlayBook Full Review

RIM enters the tablet scene with the seven-inch BlackBerry PlayBook, which marks a handful of firsts. For the venerable mobile maker, the PlayBook is its first tablet, and it is also arguably the first BlackBerry product marketed for its consumer appeal. I’ve had RIM reps tell me that the PlayBook could be the first BlackBerry product many consumers own.

BlackBerry PlayBook ReviewThe PlayBook is also the first tablet running RIM’s new BlackBerry Tablet OS, which is based on QNX Neutrino (found in embedded applications, including in-car systems and the international space station). It is designed to be especially flexible and handle true multitasking.

Finally, it’s the first major, touch-based mobile tablet to contend with both Google Android and Apple iOS while also trying to elbow in on the Windows 7 slates currently targeting the enterprise.

Google, with its hardware partners, and Apple have spent the last year polishing and perfecting their tablet offerings, RIM is just getting started with its. Does the PlayBook contend out of the gate? Or is this first-generation tablet no good? Read on to find out.

RIM announces Blackberry 7 OS

May 23rd, 2011

RIM announces Blackberry 7 OSRIM has officially announced their new Blackberry OS, 7. This comes after they accidentally put up a website talking about the new Blackberry Bold Touch that told a little about the new operating system.

The two new phones that take advantage of this are the Blackberry Bold 9900 and the Blackberry Bold 9930.

The new OS will focus on faster web browsing that will deliver better JavaScript Performance along with support for HTML5, and the UI will also be much simpler and easier to use.

One big thing in the Blackberry OS 7 is the Blackberry balance feature that allows personal content to be separated from corporate content. How this will work is unknown but will be known when the two new phones launch in summer.

Some additional features include voice based searches, wider document support and a better media experience.

After RIM launched the BlackBerry Bold 9650 for both Sprint and Verizon earlier this year, regional carrier U.S. Cellular now has a turn at it as well. Like the other two, the U.S. Cellular version is an upgrade to the BlackBerry Tour, and features Wi-Fi, more onboard memory, and an optical trackpad. In this review, we will mostly focus on the features and performance that U.S. Cellular offers. For more information about the phone’s design and core functions, please read the full review of the RIM BlackBerry Bold 9650 for Sprint. RIM BlackBerry Curve 3GIntroduction:

Though the BlackBerry Curve 8530 was just released at the beginning of the year, RIM is back with the Curve 3G 9330 for Sprint and Verizon. This new Curve offers virtually no physical upgrades to the 8530, but under the hood it packs a new processor, more memory and most importantly is upgradable to BlackBerry OS 6. BlackBerry Bold 9780 is official with T-Mobile for $129.99

October 28th, 2010

And just like that, we finally now have an official date and pricing for T-Mobile customers who are eagerly awaiting to check out the latest offering from RIM’s camp. The BlackBerry Bold 9780 will begin to go on sale starting on November 12th for the very happy price of $129.99 with a 2-year agreement.

Customers won’t have to wait long, especially when previous reports hinted to a November 17th launch date, to get their hands on this BlackBerry OS 6 powered smartphone. In addition, the rest of the world will also be getting in with the handset next month as well. Following up after the popular BlackBerry Bold 9700, the Bold 9780 features some updated hardware under the hood – like 512MB of RAM and a 5-megapixel auto-focus camera.

Naturally, the biggest thing expected out of it is that customers will have the opportunity of using BlackBerry OS 6 on a non-touchscreen device for the very first time. And with its $129.99 on-contract price, there are probably a lot of people extremely glad to see it sport a competitive price out of the gate.

RIM BlackBerry Torch 9800

October 6th, 2010

Introduction:

In this day and age, you’ve got to continuously innovate in a broad spectrum of categories to keep pace with the ever evolving nature of the mobile industry. It’s clearly a live fast, die hard atmosphere with yesterday’s high-end smartphones passing the torch and legacy to newer devices expected to live up to the expectations of the constant changing needs of consumers. Wherever you look right now, there is no denying the vast amount of devices available at the finger tips of consumers, but it truly takes something quite compelling to get them to side with one specifically more than another. RIM built their empire by attacking the business and enterprise end of the mobile market, however, they weren’t as successful in attracting everyday consumers. We’ve seen them go through two touchscreen offerings, with the second one seen as a vast improvement over the first, but regardless of all of its prowess, the BlackBerry Storm2 still could not firmly grasp itself as a heavy contender.

Enter the BlackBerry Torch 9800 which not only holds RIM’s legacy on its back, but it’s also showcasing a rebooted platform which is optimistic in grabbing the mind share of the everyday consumer – the demographic they’ve been unable to consistently attract. Sporting a whole new form factor we haven’t seen produced ever by RIM, and with competition encroaching on their usual turf from all sides, will the BlackBerry Torch 9800 be able to keep it at bay, while being able to catapult itself as a worthy and viable competitor in this cut throat industry? Let’s find out!

BlackBerry Bold 9700 Black

September 22nd, 2010

The BlackBerry Bold 9700, especially the T-Mobile version we reviewed, is the quintessential modern BlackBerry. It does everything right that BlackBerry fans love, but it doesn’t improve on the formula one bit. Calling, messaging and business features are top notch. Besides the superlative battery life for which BlackBerry devices are known, the BlackBerry Bold 9700 is T-Mobile’s first 3G smartphone with UMA calling, which means you’ll always have good reception if you have a Wi-Fi network nearby. If you don’t mind digging through the BlackBerry App World (and digging FOR the App World), you’ll find great social networking apps for keeping up with Facebook, uploading photos to your favorite sites and more. But if RIM wants the BlackBerry to stay competitive, it’s time to get serious about the Web browser, a feature that has lagged behind for years now. Plus, when you’re using the BlackBerry Bold 9700′s aging, menu-heavy interface, it’s too easy to be reminded of the phone’s pager heritage. Worst of all, RIM’s flagship BlackBerry Bold 9700 doesn’t bring anything new to the party. It does everything well that we’ve already seen a BlackBerry do, and now we’d like the phone to learn some new tricks. Release: November 2009. Price: $200.
