HP TouchPad: Last stand for iPad competitors?

June 22nd, 2011

Apple shook up the mobile space with the introduction of the original iPad. The futuristic slate design coupled with Apple’s masterful marketing captured the imagination of consumers in the millions. The sheer number of units sold by Apple shows the iPad is not just selling to the Apple faithful, it has crossed the mainstream consumer boundary by appealing to a broad cross-spectrum of buyers. Many tablets based on the Android platform have appeared with none of them grabbing even a small fraction of the appeal of the iPad. The HP TouchPad hitting retailers in a few days may very well be the last stand for competitors for the iPad.

I have written in the past that I have seen no proof that a tablet market exists outside of the iPad, and having witnessed the dismal launch of big-name Android tablets nothing has changed my view. Android tablets are not selling well by anyone’s standard, and RIM has not set sales records with the BlackBerry PlayBook. Apple keeps selling millions of iPads, and a big bank of competitors keeps releasing tablets that few are buying.

Analysts have noticed this too, as reports of tablet makers slowing down production of brand new tablet models tells the tale. Recent surveysstill show clearly that the iPad is growing even though the number of competing products in the market is increasing. Consumers are buying iPads but not other tablets in significant numbers.

With no market clearly defined for tablets other than the iPad, HP is about to enter the fray with its first webOS tablet. The TouchPad may be the last stand of iPad competitors in the attempt to garner significant market share from Apple. The good news for HP is the TouchPad is different enough from the pack to have a shot at carving that share.

Size. It is no coincidence that HP is producing the TouchPad with the same size as the iPad. Android tablet makers have chosen different sizes for their offerings, but HP is reproducing the 9.7-inch display running at 1024×768 of the iPad. It doesn’t sound like a big difference compared to the many Android tablets with 10.1-inch displays, but it really is. Those larger tablets are using a wide-screen format that Apple has passed on and HP is wise to do the same. This allows the TouchPad to have a similar footprint of the iPad, which has proven popular with consumers. It is also better for using the tablet in portrait orientation, as the wide-screen format is too narrow.

Polish. The appeal of the iPad is how polished the tablet experience is for the user, something Honeycomb tablets are sadly lacking. The TouchPad uses HP’s webOS which has the most polished user interface on any tablet. The demonstrations I have seen of the TouchPad in action show a simple interface that is extremely attractive and polished in appearance. It is the first tablet interface that looks better than the iPad’s, and has better features presented in an intuitive package.

Distribution channels. HP is the first company producing a tablet to compete with the iPad that has the global channels already in place to give the TouchPad a massive retail presence at launch. The company also has tremendous production capacity to flood those channels with product, so all of the pieces are in place. All HP must do to capitalize on this is market the heck out of the TouchPad at launch. The HP name is already famous in both the household and the enterprise, so with proper marketing the TouchPad has a serious shot at grabbing good sales numbers.

The launch of the TouchPad into the tablet market is a big gamble for HP. There is no proof a non-iPad tablet market even exists, but HP has all of the right things in place to give it a serious shot. This will be interesting to watch unfold as the TouchPad hits the market, and we see what the consumer reaction is to a non-iPad.

$350 Impression 10 Android Tablet Targets The First Gen. Apple iPad

June 22nd, 2011

Leader International Inc. has unveiled their latest tablet the $350 Impression 10 (I10 – for short). With a quick glance at the features list for the Impression 10 it’s easy to see which tablet it’s trying to match-up with, the first generation Apple iPad.

Both the first gen. Apple iPad and the new Impression 10 tablet are listed as having 9.7-inch XGA (1024 x 768 pixels) IPS LCD screens with capacitive multi-touch support. Also both tablets feature 512MB of RAM, 1 GHz single-core ARM Cortex-A8 SoC’s manufactured by Samsung and 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi.

Although other than those similarities the Impression 10 does embrace a lot of features other Google Android based tablets have in the recent past. The Impression 10 offers a 2MP built-in webcam, two built-in mini USB 2.0 ports, a HDMI port, a microSD/MMC card slot (to expand on the 4GB of storage that’s built-in), up to 6 hours battery life, Adobe Flash Player 10.1, and Google Android 2.2 Froyo operating system.

Leader International claims that the Impression 10 tablet is already available nationwide (United States) in retail stores and online. After some attempts at Googling the tablets name I have not found any online retailers that have the tablet available for purchase. Also on the Leader International website no purchasing option is offered for the Impression 10.

Android to overtake iPhone OS

June 5th, 2011

In a report released today by Gartner research firm they note that by the end of 2010 Android will have surpassed iPhone, Blackberry and Windows to be the second most popular smartphone OS. The most popular is Nokia who holds 30% of the market, but Android should be equal to this level by 2014.

The explosive growth of the Android OS is fueled both by its open source architecture as well as being available on many cheaper phones that can get into the hands of your average consumer.

This report takes into account Verizon starting to sell the iPhone in the coming months.

Google voice on iPhone

June 3rd, 2011

Last year Apple ended up having some issues with Google after it rejected their Google Voice app, which led the FCC to investigate the matter. Meanwhile, Apple did let Google Voice support apps feature in its App Store. Now according to Techcrunch, Apple has approved the official Google Voice app for iPhone.

This is surprising because Apple doesn’t like any level of control being taken from them, maybe the FCC had to nudge them in the right direction. According to Techcrunch’s source Google is working on the Google Voice app’s iOS 4.0 compatibility and multi-tasking capabilities.

No concrete details are available but when inquiring about Google Voice app for iPhone, Google gave this official statement:

“We currently offer Google Voice mobile apps for Blackberry and Android, and we offer an HTML5 web app for the iPhone. We have nothing further to announce at this time.”

This is a very vague statement as Google has already added HTML5 features to Gmail for iOS and their m.google.com voice page. Supposedly the app will be available in the iTunes store within the next few months, but we’ll have to wait and see if Jobs squashes this one like he did the original.

iPhone coming to Verizon LTE network

June 3rd, 2011

Well it’s finally here, the New York Times announced Friday that a source from Apple told them that they will launch an iPhone on Verizon early next year on their new LTE network. The LTE (long term evolution) is faster than 3G and handles all usage including phone calls as data packets, so it’s also more efficient.

The Verizon launch will end Apple’s exclusivity contract with AT&T and many people will be happy about this, due to the millions of complaints about bad service from AT&T and lack of 3G coverage. It will also launch only a few weeks after Verizon officially launches their new LTE network, and it will be the first LTE phone ever from Apple.

Apple iPhone 5 to include mobile e-wallet

May 23rd, 2011

Apple iPhone 5 to include mobile e-wallet

It looks like Apple is joining the ranks of the Nexus S and will include mobile wallet technology in the iPhone 5.

Richard Doherty, director of the consulting firm Envisioneering Group, told Bloomberg today that the next-generation iPad and iPhone will both include near-field communication technology. Doherty cited engineers that he personally knows who are working on the project.

He said that Apple could start its own mobile payment service for use at retail stores as early as mid-2011, around the time when the iPhone 5 is expected to launch. For this service iTunes could be revamped to include credit card features like loyalty credits and points earned through transactions.

“Using the service, customers could walk into a store or restaurant and make payments straight from an iPad or iPhone,” the report said. “They could also receive loyalty rewards and credits for purchases, such as when referring a friend, Doherty said.”

He claimed that Apple has already built a prototype payment terminal intended for small businesses “such as hairdressers and mom-and-pop stores.” He added that Apple may “heavily” subsidize the hardware, or even give it away for free to encourage rapid adoption  and boost sales of NFC-equipped iPhones and iPads.

EXOvault exo2 aluminum iPhone case

February 8th, 2011

EXOvault exo2 aluminum iPhone caseEXovault makes metal iPhone cases in Brooklyn, New York. If that statement doesn’t grab your attention then you might as well stop reading right now.

With the majority of iPhone cases being made of hard plastics or grippy rubber materials, metals cases are something you don’t see every day. Metal, or other more exotic materials, might seem like an odd choice for an iPhone case, but when you consider that this is a $600 device that is spending just about every waking hour either on your person or a few feet away from you, it makes sense that some people might want to upgrade from the standard materials.

The exo2 case for the iPhone 3G and 3GS is available in either brass or aluminum. It’s a slightly modified version of EXOvault’s original exo case, which was available in brass, aluminum, or (for a short time) titanium. The exo’s metal venting at the bottom of the rear (so the case would not block the phone’s antennae) has been replaced with a rosewood insert. The combination of metal and wood means the ex02 has sort of a steampunk feel to it (especially if you opt for the brass) but clean lines and a few color options keep the case looking contemporary.

Skyfire plays Flash video on iPhone and iPad

Skyfire plays Flash video on iPhone and iPad

Skyfire plays Flash video on iPhone and iPad

Skyfire is coming to iOS devices on Thursday, including the iPhone, iPad and iPod. It allows users to watch Flash videos on their devices which is a welcome addition, since Apple refuses to support Flash.

How it works is that it intercepts the video, converts it to HTML5 (Apple’s video format of choice) and then streams it to the user. One problem is that HULU has found out about this and put up firewalls to block mobile users from watching their videos, unless you have the paid version which allows mobile users.

The mobile browser app is going to be available Thursday morning for $2.99. Here is a demo video showing the app in action:

iPhone 4

iPhone 4 Overview

iphone 4 reviewIt’s good to be the king. Or at least it was. Until the rest of the land began forming their own castles and employing their own hierarchical structures and empowering their own citizens. Yes, the iPhone 4 is a dazzling new device that sits in a faded throne. Rather than feel an ever-present sense of complacence, the iPhone 4 has to stand guard day and night. Samsung’s Galaxy S phones, HTC’s Droid Incredible and EVO, Motorola’s Droid X and Droid 2 and Blackberry’s Bold 9800 are encroaching and threatening to usurp the smartphone crown.

Have no fear, for the iPhone 4 offers some essential and shiny upgrades like its Retina display, 5-megapixel camera with 720p, FaceTime Web chat, and bolstered processing guts. But with so many other advanced smartphone kingdoms forming over the neighboring hills, the iPhone 4′s upgrades can only solidify its place as one of the premiere entertainment smartphones rather than a business powerhouse as well. Let’s let down the drawbridge and head inside the castle.
